Visitors strolling along the Hermosa Beach Pier often stop to admire the bronze surfer standing watch over the shoreline. But many don’t know the story behind one of the South Bay’s most beloved landmarks.
The statue honors Tim Kelly, a legendary Los Angeles County Lifeguard, accomplished surfer, member of the famed Jacobs Surf Team, and dedicated Junior Lifeguard instructor. Kelly was widely respected throughout the South Bay surf community for his athleticism, leadership, and commitment to ocean safety.
Tragically, Kelly lost his life in 1964 at just 24 years old. A year later, the community came together to dedicate a memorial near the foot of the Hermosa Beach Pier, creating a lasting tribute to a young man whose impact far exceeded his years.
Today, the Tim Kelly Surf Statue stands as a symbol of Hermosa Beach’s deep connection to surfing, lifeguarding, and coastal culture. In 2020, the landmark received a remarkable restoration when local artist Rick Koenig helped recreate and replace the statue’s missing head using modern 3D-printing technology, preserving the memorial for future generations.
Next time you’re walking the Strand or visiting the pier plaza, take a moment to look a little closer. You’re not just seeing a surfer. You’re looking at a piece of South Bay history.
Location: Pier Plaza at the base of the Hermosa Beach Pier
Fun Fact: While Tim Kelly’s statue stands near the pier, another South Bay surfing icon, Dewey Weber, is honored with a separate statue at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
