George F. Canyon Nature Preserve is a 51-acre natural area showcasing one of the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s most diverse ecosystems. The preserve features scenic trails through coastal sage scrub and willow riparian habitats, while an intermittent stream attracts birds, insects, and native wildlife throughout the year. Visitors can also see the peninsula’s only mainland exposure of Catalina schist bedrock, making the preserve an important geological destination.
Interpretive signs and benches are placed along the trail, allowing visitors to learn about the local environment while enjoying peaceful surroundings. As hikers climb toward the upper viewpoints, they are rewarded with sweeping views of the Los Angeles Basin. Educational programs, guided nature walks, and seasonal events continue to serve the community despite the Nature Center building currently being closed for replacement.
George F. Canyon remains one of the Peninsula’s best destinations for hiking, wildlife observation, and environmental education while protecting valuable native habitats for future generations.
